what is cybersecurity?
Honestly i feel like i don't know anymore.
so some backstory. I have always been interested in this topic since i was younger, something about spys and hacking etc. seemed cool as a young tyke. I tried studying some, but never got that far into it. Now being given the opportunity again I'm able to study it some more in a professional setting.
That doesn't seem to be the case though. or at least it seems to be a very small part of the case.
so far in this degree it's making me realize that what is "cyber security" is the physical aspect of the computers and databases and such. which is an aspect most people don't think of.
Although I thought that cybersec would have had more of a focus on the computer aspects of it, maybe that comes later?
interestingly we are just learning the basics of using a computer i would say. things like coding, or programs in linux, a lil bit of networking, some stuff in computer math, of course english and ethics that just don't apply anymore. it's a time. it's outdated, it's uptodate. or whatever they currently say.
i find myself disillusioned with higher education and schooling. Which isn't a surprise or anything, that's usually the case i find. there's lots of information out there beyond the schools and waht they teach you. what you can and should be learning on your own is much more than what you can learn in classes. it'll probably more up to date, as institutions take longer to update. there's just more beaurocracy.
nothing is that surprising ultimately, but hey it is what it is.
so what is cybersecurity?
i guess it's part of the skills and the connections we make along the way.
is it coding? i guess? being able to look at code can be useful
is it math? if you are creating or deciphering cryptology sure? but that's incredibly specialized.
is it english, or ethics? not really, but those things always play a part.
is it linux? no. but you should know whatever systems your company uses...and companies tend to use windows right now, there's certainly space for linux to play a bigger and bigger role in the future...we will see if it will, or if it will continue to be just a more "nerdy" experience.
is it netowrking basics? no, but you need to know the basics to be able to get ot the next set of objectives. knowing how the internet was made, and the protocols that used to be used are useful.
is it how to set up and use a database? no, not at all. but learning about those basics can help you in the future when you are having to deal with databases... which most of the world is housed in databases from my understanding.
this really brings me to the original question again, what is cybersecurity?
i don't know. the field is so big ... it didn't seem that big from the outside, but starting to go into it it appears it is just larger and larger than i thought it would be.
that's not a bad thing. that's growth. that's realizing that a field is bigger than you thought. learning you have more and more to learn than just what is being done beforehand.
and hopefully one day i'll know whatever cybersecurity is.
thank you for taking time to read this, i appreciate you.
