thoughts on empire of ai

ai... or llm's really.

yeah, i'm reading a book called empire of ai by karen hao. if you want an over view of what open ai has done to get to where we are... or at least until a few years ago, it's a good book

it just makes me hate everything though. i felt this way when i read careless people by sarah wynn-williams.

the parallels there... aren't even that shocking honestly? sam pretty much followed the same path that existed... why? because he was raised on that same path.

or at least i assume as much, being in silicon valley and running y-combinator.

i can't help but think that we wouldn't have had this mess with "ai" if same and elon hadn't gotten so scared of the idea of gen ai, and decided that they had to pursue it at all costs... because the only thing that can stop a bad ai, is a good ai....... sure

i keep thinking, the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun. or what some ridiculous people say.

i don't doubt that everything i've done online now, has been used for this mess of a product. one that is built on a technology to give it's own answers to questions, or hallucinate as they call it.

it's frankly ... not even that weird that they co-opt so many words that mean different things for this project. frankly it really isn't.

from the beginning artificial intellignece was coined, to add legitimacy to the work.

so so we keep doign that. and just keep falling into the same patterns over and over and over

i dunno, this isn't the first time i've been utterly disgusted with the way things are being run. or rather the way we are?

in the book was a section about how the ai said we should bomb africa because there was no way for us to recover africa... or make it better without doing that.

...

...

i remember myself writing an essay in j9th grade about that same issue, when i was asked what can we do to improve africa/ somalia. after watching hotel rwanda and having a geography based class about these things.

what was i taught? that lead me to that conclusion? african people are bad? we messed them up so much that there is nothing we can do to fix them? it isn't worth trying to fix the issues we have made so just pave over it and start again? there isn't any way to fix anything, so just ignore it and keep going?

i dunno. i can't remember. that was a long time ago now.

i no longer think those things, i think we should be improving the areas we made a mess of. we need to be lifting up all people... that's how we get to a better society.

i bet that ai/llms can change also.

heck that's why we pour so much into the "training" of them. to make them better.

at the sake of destroying others...

i don't know.

i have mixed feelings here.

some are bad, cause i can see how we have been bad for so long. we'll slowly keep improving, as we always do.

but it's also that we continue to be bad in different ways.

i hope we are overall changing to be more positive, the sections of the world i'm a part of are.

i hope that my bubble isn't small.

i hope that we do improve.

one day at a time.

we don't need to be so racist towards other people.. there are no others. we are all that is here.

we need to be

we need to support each other

and the things we see as well.

thanks for reading~
