again't big tech

i've spent quite some time de-googling my life over the last few years... the second hardest thing to get out of was google mail... and i don't think i'm fully out of that one yet.

and by de-googling i mean just getting out of big tech, and into smaller/open source/ better feeling ones.

the hardest one for me to get out of though, has been youtube by a wide margin. youtube is ever present in just about everything. want some music? youtube. want a tutorial? youtube. governmetn announcement?youtube. did someone make a trailer? youtube.

it's so so amazing that that's the case. honestly. the monopoly that they have created is absolutely amazing... and i can see a good argument as to why we need such a public good.

to bad it isn't a public good like that though.

i really don't like when i can notice how good the data that google has on me is. there have been multiple times when i have come across a recomendation and been like... nah that's not something i'm interested in at all. only to be interested in it a few months later. it's just that they were a little to early in there advertising... or maybe they just directed me into the thing they wanted me to see.

i realize i don't have any real control over my life. and frankly that's scary.

i don't know if getting off of big tech gets me... more control? or maybe just the feeling of control?

the feeling of being able to learn things again, is frankly really nice.

trying to take my own path sometimes, is so freeing. but also there is so much stuff out there in the world, and frankly i don't know any of it.

how do you come across new things? should you come across new things? how about learning about something obscure? say synthesizers. how do you do that without videos or a community?

maybe i should be trying to find that in person, instead of online... huh. that's an idea actually.

because youtube and the rest have become so big...we stopped doing anything in the community. or finding community around us.

that is probably part of the problem, isn't it?

i no longer need to have a mechanic friend to help me take apart a vehicle... i look up that video on youtube, instead of finding a friend or taking it apart myself.

substitute that for just about anything.

and sure we can talk about how is anyone supposed to learn without the internet... but i don't know if i'm saying that here. i'm just talking about a potential alternative to big tech.

there can always be books or web pages that help teach you. heck there will always be videos as well. lets be real.

but not knowing, or not being able to discover things yourself? they instead get fed to you? and you have to decide to swallow or to spit. and most of the time you don't get that choice.

hmm, maybe go out and make a friend? learn something from them. or from a book? that sounds interesting.
